Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making your website the clearest, fastest and most trusted answer to what your customers type into Google. In the UAE the work has a few local twists: a bilingual audience, customers who search from a phone while moving between emirates, and a lot of competition from companies that spend heavily on ads. This guide gives you the order of work that suits a small or medium business. No one can promise a ranking, but you can build the foundations that give you the best chance.
1. Start with what customers search
List the services you sell and the words real customers use for them, not your internal names. A clinic says "orthodontics"; patients type "braces dentist Sharjah". Write each service, then add a place: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain or Fujairah. Check Google's autocomplete, "people also ask" box and the related searches at the bottom of the results. Group the phrases by intent:
- Ready to buy: "ERP software Dubai", "web design company Sharjah". These deserve a dedicated service page.
- Researching: "how much does an ERP cost in the UAE". These deserve a helpful article.
- Comparing: "best POS for restaurants UAE". These deserve a comparison or checklist.
2. One page, one topic
Search engines match a page to a search. A page trying to cover every service ranks for none. Build a clear page for each main service, with a headline that names the service and place, an explanation in plain language, proof, answers to common questions and a clear way to enquire. Our own UAE services map shows the idea.
3. Cover each emirate honestly
If you really serve several emirates, say so, and give each one a page with unique, useful content: the industries there, the local authorities, the way you work with clients, real projects. Do not publish ten near-identical pages with only the city name changed. Google calls these doorway pages and they can hurt you. Read how to do multi-emirate SEO without doorway pages.
4. Google Business Profile and local signals
For anything with a physical location or service area, your Google Business Profile often brings more enquiries than your website. Choose the correct primary category, fill every field, add real photos, list services, and answer reviews. Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere. See our local SEO guide.
5. Arabic and English
If your customers use both languages, give each language its own URL and tell Google about the relationship with hreflang tags. Translate the content properly rather than relying on a plugin. See bilingual SEO for UAE websites.
6. Technical basics
- Speed on mobile. Compress images, avoid heavy scripts and use good hosting. See website speed and Core Web Vitals.
- Clean structure. Short URLs, one title and one main heading per page, descriptive link text.
- Crawlability. An XML sitemap, a sensible robots file and no broken links.
- Structured data that describes your business, services and articles. See schema markup for UAE businesses.
- HTTPS everywhere.
7. Content that earns links and trust
Write articles that answer questions your customers ask: costs, rules, checklists, comparisons. In the UAE, guides on VAT, corporate tax, licences, Emiratisation and free zones attract steady interest. Include real experience, such as a project you delivered or a mistake you see often. Keep pages updated and show who wrote them. Links from relevant directories, suppliers, partners, chambers and news sites help, but buy none; paid link schemes risk penalties.
8. Measure what matters
Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Record form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks as conversions. Review monthly: which pages get impressions, which queries bring clicks, which pages lead to enquiries. See marketing analytics for UAE businesses.
How long does it take?
New sites commonly need three to six months to show steady gains, and competitive searches can take longer. Combine SEO with Google Ads if you need enquiries sooner, and compare the options in SEO vs Google Ads vs social media.
A 90-day SEO starter plan
- Days 1 to 30: set up Search Console and Analytics, fix technical errors, complete your Google Business Profile, and write or improve your three most important service pages.
- Days 31 to 60: publish four helpful guides answering real customer questions, add internal links between them and your service pages, and collect reviews.
- Days 61 to 90: add location or industry pages where you have unique content, earn a few relevant links, and review which queries bring clicks and enquiries.
Common mistakes
- Targeting only the broadest phrase, such as "software company", and ignoring specific searches.
- Copying text from competitors or suppliers.
- Leaving old pages with outdated prices, rules or contact details.
- Ignoring mobile layout.
- Buying cheap links or hiring anyone who guarantees page-one rankings.
