When a website is slow or goes down, customers do not blame the hosting company. They blame you. Hosting looks like a small line in the budget, but it affects speed, security, search performance and your reputation. This guide helps you choose a plan that suits your business without paying for more than you need.

Types of hosting

  • Shared hosting: many sites share one server. Cheap and fine for small brochure sites and blogs, but performance can vary if neighbours use more resources.
  • VPS (virtual private server): your own slice of a server with guaranteed resources. Better for busier sites, stores and custom applications, and requires more technical care.
  • Cloud hosting: flexible resources that can grow with traffic, often billed by use. Suitable for growing sites and apps.
  • Managed hosting: the provider handles updates, security and monitoring for you, at a higher price.

Where should the server be?

For UAE visitors, a server in or near the region reduces delay. Several major providers operate data centres in the UAE or the Gulf; confirm current availability with them. If you handle regulated data, such as health or certain financial information, ask about data location rules before you choose. See cloud hosting and data residency.

Checklist

  1. Uptime commitment and monitoring. Look for a clear service level and a status page.
  2. SSL certificate. Free, automatically renewed certificates are common; make sure HTTPS works on every page.
  3. Backups. Daily automatic backups, kept for at least a week, with a tested restore. Keep your own copy as well.
  4. Security. Firewall, malware scanning, protection against brute-force logins, and timely software updates.
  5. Performance. Current PHP version, caching, fast storage and enough memory. See website speed and Core Web Vitals.
  6. Email. Business mailboxes with spam filtering and proper authentication records.
  7. Support. Chat or phone during UAE working hours, with real technical staff.
  8. Control. You should own the account and be able to export your data and leave.

Beware of

  • "Unlimited" claims with hidden fair-use limits.
  • Big discounts that jump on renewal.
  • Accounts registered in the developer's name instead of yours.
  • Hosting an online store on the cheapest shared plan.

Moving without downtime

Copy the site to the new server, test it with a temporary address, lower the DNS record's time-to-live a day before, switch the records, and keep the old server for a few days. Check forms, payments and email before and after.

Questions to put to a hosting provider

  • What is your uptime record over the last 12 months?
  • How quickly do you respond to a ticket at 9 p.m. on a Friday?
  • Can I restore a single file or database from yesterday?
  • Which PHP and database versions do you run, and how do you handle upgrades?
  • Will you help migrate my current site?

Test the answers before you commit: open a ticket during the trial and see how it is handled.
