"How much should I spend?" is the first question most business owners ask about Google Ads, and the honest answer is: it depends on what a customer is worth to you. There is no universal figure. There is, however, a sensible method for finding yours and a handful of bidding strategies that suit different stages of an account. This guide walks through both without relying on made-up averages.

Work backward from customer value

Start with the money, not the platform. Answer four questions:

  1. What is the average profit from a new customer over the first year?
  2. What share of enquiries becomes a paying customer?
  3. Therefore, what is an enquiry worth to you?
  4. What proportion of that value are you willing to spend to win it?

For example, if a customer brings AED 6,000 in profit and one in ten enquiries closes, an enquiry is worth about AED 600. If you are willing to spend a third of that, you can pay roughly AED 200 per enquiry. Multiply by the number of enquiries you want each month and you have a starting budget grounded in your own numbers.

Budget needs enough data to learn

A very small budget produces too little data to optimise. If your cost per click is high and your daily budget buys only a handful of clicks, you may wait months to see a pattern. Either concentrate on fewer, higher-intent keywords or fund the account enough to gather meaningful results within a few weeks. A narrow, well-targeted campaign with a modest budget beats a wide, thinly funded one.

Daily budgets and how Google paces them

You set a daily budget per campaign, and Google may spend somewhat more on busy days and less on quiet ones, balancing out across the month. If a campaign regularly runs out of budget early, you may be missing valuable searches later in the day, or your targeting may be too broad. Check the search terms and the hours when conversions happen before simply raising the limit.

Understanding bidding strategies

  • Manual CPC: you set the maximum you will pay per click. It gives control, which suits new accounts and low volume, but needs hands-on management.
  • Maximise clicks: Google gets as many clicks as possible within budget. It is useful to gather early data, ideally with a bid cap, but it chases cheap clicks rather than quality.
  • Maximise conversions: Google aims for the most conversions within budget, using your tracking data.
  • Target CPA: you state the cost you want per conversion and Google bids to hit it, once it has enough conversion history.
  • Target ROAS: for accounts that record conversion values, Google aims for a return on ad spend.

Match the strategy to the stage

New accounts with little data usually start with manual or capped bidding while tracking is verified. Once you have a steady flow of conversions, often a few dozen a month, conversion-based strategies tend to work better, because the algorithm has something to learn from. Moving to automation too early leads to erratic spend; staying manual too long leaves performance on the table.

Guard against bad signals

Automated bidding is only as good as the data it receives. If you count low-value actions as conversions, such as scrolling or short visits, it will happily find more of them. Define conversions that reflect real business value, give higher values to better actions, and review the lead quality in your CRM regularly.

Review, do not react to every day

Daily numbers swing because of weekends, holidays, competitors and chance. Judge performance over meaningful periods, such as two to four weeks, and make changes deliberately. Large budget or target changes can restart learning, so adjust gradually.

Scaling what works

When a campaign produces enquiries at a healthy cost, increase budget in steps and watch whether cost per enquiry holds. If it rises sharply, you have reached the limit of efficient demand for those keywords, and the next step is to add new themes or channels instead of pushing harder on the same ones.
