Wasted spend is the quiet tax on most Google Ads accounts. It does not show up as an error; it shows up as clicks that never become enquiries. The good news is that the leaks are predictable, and plugging them is mostly a matter of regular, unglamorous habits. Here are the places to look.

1. Build a negative keyword list

When you bid on "accounting software", Google may also show your ad for "free accounting software", "accounting software jobs" and "accounting software course". Unless you sell those things, you are paying for visitors who will never buy. Negative keywords block those searches. Start with common waste words: free, cheap (if you are premium), jobs, salary, course, tutorial, download, template and DIY. Then add to the list every week from real search data.

2. Understand match types

Match types control how closely a search must resemble your keyword.

  • Exact match targets searches with the same meaning as your keyword. It is the tightest control.
  • Phrase match shows your ad when the search includes the meaning of your phrase, with extra words around it.
  • Broad match reaches the widest range of related searches and can be useful with strong conversion data, but it is the easiest way to lose money without noticing.

For a new account, begin with exact and phrase match, then expand carefully once you can see what converts.

3. Read the search terms report every week

This report shows the actual queries that triggered your ads. It is the single most useful screen in the account. Each week, scan it for irrelevant searches to add as negatives, and for good searches that deserve their own keyword and tailored ad. An account that nobody reads search terms for will drift toward waste.

4. Check locations, devices and schedules

Location targeting should reflect where you can serve customers. Choose "people in or regularly in" your target area rather than "interested in", so you do not pay for clicks from people who are only curious about Dubai from abroad. Check performance by device, since a page that is clumsy on mobile will waste mobile clicks. If calls are handled only in office hours, consider ad scheduling.

5. Separate brand from non-brand

People searching your company name are different from people searching for a service. Keep these in separate campaigns so brand clicks, which are cheap and convert well, do not hide poor performance elsewhere.

6. Fix the landing page, not just the ads

If clicks are relevant but enquiries are rare, the leak is on the page. Slow loading, unclear offers, long forms and missing WhatsApp or call buttons all turn good traffic into waste. Test one change at a time and compare conversion rates.

7. Watch automated settings

Campaign wizards often switch on extras by default, such as the Display Network on Search campaigns or broad targeting expansion. Review settings after setup and turn off anything you did not choose.

A simple weekly routine

  1. Review the search terms report and add negatives.
  2. Check spend against budget and cost per enquiry by campaign.
  3. Pause keywords and ads with plenty of data and no enquiries.
  4. Note one change to test next week.

Fifteen disciplined minutes a week beats a monthly panic. Over a quarter, the account becomes cleaner, cheaper and easier to scale.
