UAE Pass is the national digital identity for residents and citizens, used to sign in to government and some private services and to sign documents digitally. For a business building a customer portal, an application form or a booking app, it offers a way to confirm who a person is without asking them to create yet another password. It is not right for every product, so decide carefully.

Where it fits

  • Portals that serve residents, such as tenant portals, school or clinic portals, and service applications.
  • Regulated onboarding, where you need to confirm identity before opening an account or accepting an application.
  • Digital signature of documents, such as contracts and forms, where a signed record is useful.

It is less relevant for general public websites or purely business-to-business tools used by international staff, where regular login with multi-factor authentication may suit better.

How integration generally works

  1. Register and request access. Organisations apply to the UAE Pass programme and receive credentials for a staging (test) environment first, then for production after review.
  2. Add the sign-in button. The user is redirected to the UAE Pass app or page to authenticate, then returns to your site with an authorization code.
  3. Exchange the code on your server for tokens and retrieve the allowed user information. Secrets stay on the server, never in the browser or app.
  4. Link to your own account record, so the person has a profile in your system and you handle roles and permissions yourself.
  5. Test and go live, including error cases such as a cancelled login.

Specifics, such as available scopes, onboarding steps and timing, are set by the programme and may change. Ask for the current developer documentation at the start of your project.

Planning questions

  • What is the minimum identity data you actually need? Collect less, store less.
  • What happens for users without UAE Pass, such as visitors or companies? Provide an alternative.
  • Who is the legal controller of the data, and how do you explain it in your privacy notice? See UAE data protection for software buyers.
  • How long will approval take? Build that into the schedule.

Security basics

Use the standard authorization flow, validate state parameters, keep client secrets private, log sign-ins and offer session timeouts. Tie permissions to your own roles. Our cyber security basics cover the wider picture.

A realistic timeline

The technical work is often short, perhaps a few days for the sign-in flow. The long part is usually onboarding and approval, plus legal review of the data you request. Plan the project in two stages: first build and test against the staging environment while approval proceeds, then switch to production when credentials arrive. Keep a fallback login for cases when the national service is unavailable or the user has no account.
